Certificate Ceremony 2017 for English literacy programme

The SECOND Certificate Ceremony for the English Literacy Programme took place at Sophakama Primary School on Thursday, 8 June 2017.

We cannot believe how this programme has grown! From its humble beginnings of 9 volunteers sitting on children’s plastic chairs, in an outside area of the school building, reading a few books to 18 learners, to this week’s wonderful afternoon.

Twenty volunteers (15 fulltime and 5 part-time) congratulated 34 learners on completing their year on the literacy programme.

Our books and resources now take up two full cupboards in the library storeroom and reading sessions take place twice a week for an hour, following a formal methodology.

At the ceremony, each successful learner was awarded a certificate and a book gift from their volunteer. The large smiles on little faces was a joy to see!

Of course, no celebration is complete without a party. Learners were treated to a game of building towers with marshmallows and toothpicks (with lots of marshmallows being eaten on the way up) and some sweet treats and drinks.

We were thrilled to have a good majority of proud parents attending as well. Support and encouragement at home make all the difference. Thank you to the principal, Sabelo Makubalo, and his dedicated staff who support this programme. Thanks also to our special volunteers for their commitment and belief in the programme.

Well Done to this year’s graduates! We look forward to starting our third group of learners in August.

Such wonderful work being done to uplift the reading strengths of children at Sophakama Primary school. Anyone who feels that they can contribute to this programme would be gratefully welcomed as volunteers are really needed to help it grow.
