The Tutor Farewell function for the 2019 Year Beyond Programme tutors was held at the FNB Building in Cape Town. The spectacular views were enjoyed by about 150 tutors from schools in the Western Cape. This event is the pinnacle of their journey on the programme.

During the morning, teams were asked to present their final products to the team of judges, leading from feedback given at the previous Social Innovation Challenge (SIC) in September/October. The theme for the SIC was: “How to make MathsFUNctional”.

One of Sophakama Primary’s tutors, Anathi, was part of the group who came third on the challenge. They believe Maths is not restricte  to the classroom and needs collaboration between educators, parents and learners. They introduced the ME2U workshop, designed to create this collaboration. Their unique design and teamwork on this concept paid off!

After lunch the audience was entertained by musical activities using unconventional instruments. This was enjoyed by all and provided energy for the last part of the day – awarding certificates to tutors.

Implementing agents and facilitators at each school handed out certificates to their tutors. This was an emotional experience as the journey has not been easy for some tutors, who tackled personal challenges to get to this point. Our tutor, Anathi, received her certificate and although Tameryn was unable to make it, her contribution was also celebrated.

We congratulate the Game Changers Unit, in partnership with Community Chest, for hosting a well-organised event.

An exciting development is that Rogz Academy Books and Beyond will be welcoming three more schools to our cluster: Marconi Beam, Dunoon Primary and Silverleaf Primary Schools! Watch this YEBO space for 2020!
