Following on from our posts about Sophakama’s Art journey, we are pleased to say that the Grade 1 learners are now also benefitting from the Art pilot being run at Sophakama, as part of a collaboration between the Year Beyond Programme and the CCDI (Cape Craft and Design Institute).
From an initial group of 11 young volunteers (between the ages of 18–25 years), four successful young people are being mentored by the CCDI to teach Art to the 100 Grade 1–4 learners on the Year Beyond after-school programme.

The Grade 1 learners started with some playful activities outside, with everyone getting to know one another.
Then they spent time making strips of paper hands, which were hung in the Art class. They also made paper houses and drew pictures of furniture inside them.
The Art pilot sessions will continue until 10 November, on Tuesday afternoons for the Grade 1s and on Friday afternoons for the Grade 2–4s. On 10 November, there will be an Art exhibition showcasing what the learners have done to parents and teachers.
