Sophakama Primary School was chosen to pilot an art programme as part of the Year Beyond Programme.
This art pilot will run in addition to the academic programmes already offered on the Year Beyond Programme. It began today with 11 potential volunteers. Ranging between the ages of 18 and 25, all from Dunoon and all previous Sophakama Primary School learners. The Cape Craft and Design Institute (CCDI) hosted this event.
Volunteers spent the day practically working on art themselves and understanding how their lives and the lives of children are enriched by art.
The elements that were covered was clay, drawing, and coloring in.
The volunteers will teach the Grade 1–4 Year Beyond Programme learners over the first 6 weeks of next term. These lessons will run twice a week.
The CCDI mentors will screen them as they go along. Hopefully, two volunteers will be chosen to teach art full-time in the after school space in 2017.
The Year Beyond Programme will be implementing it in all the schools running the programme if this art pilot is successful.
It is a real compliment to Sophakama to have been chosen for this pilot! We wish all the volunteers luck on their art journey and we are sure that the children will have lots of fun!
