It is with great appreciation that the ROGZ Academy has recently received a financial boost from Laurent Vandebroek, an exchange student from Switzerland and Grade 10 pupil at Elkanah House.
On the 10th of May Laurent, fellow Grade 10 pupil Emily Raubenheimer and Mrs Liz Broad, their Grade Head, went to visit the students and staff at Sophakama.
It was a great morning as Principal, Mr Sabelo Makubalo, gave the visitors a grand tour, giving them the opportunity to spend time in different classrooms and exchanging experiences with the Sophakama learners.
The group were treated to heart felt songs performed by the choir who also gave them the opportunity to test their own Xhosa abilities by singing along with the choir. In exchange, Laurent entertained some Grade 1 pupils with expressions in German and Emily had the pleasure to read an English book for them. The next stop was to sit in on a class and watch the passionate teaching of Mr Jacob Funyara as he taught his Grade 7 students the finer details of English prepositions.
Last stop was the computer lab where the kids were hard at work.
It was an exciting and an eye opening experience for the visitors from Elkanah who will certainly remember the passion and enthusiasm shared with new friends. We are delighted that they will be able to share their experience amongst their peers and we look forward to future opportunities for shared learning.
We wish to extend big thank you to Laurent for supporting our efforts and for helping us build the strong bonds between Sophakama and Elkanah House.
