A Festive session ends off our 2017 English Literacy Programme

Our English Literacy Programme ended on a festive note for our Grade 2 learners today.

They were spoilt with cupcakes and each learner received a book from their respective volunteers, as an end-of-year gift. Seeing them end their year with smiles was a joy to see. It’s hard to believe that their first 6 months on the reading programme has passed! Next year, in their Grade 3 year, they will continue for another 6 months, giving them a year on the programme.

The main focus of the English Literacy Programme is paired and shared reading, writing, comprehension, phonics and high-frequency words. Learners play language games and hear stories, all in English.

This is a way of ensuring that these 30 learners receive individual attention in developing English, their First Additional Language. This will also assist them with the language transfer from mother tongue isiXhosa teaching to being taught in English from Grade 4 onwards.

We look forward to seeing these learners again next year!

Volunteers on the English Literacy Programme are people from all walks of life who enjoy this twice-weekly opportunity of reading with children at Sophakama Primary School.
