Being treated to a movie and a fun meal at the Spur afterwards was a well-deserved ending to the year for the Year Beyond volunteers. They have had a full year of learning and of making their contribution to the community.
Every afternoon for the past year, they have given of their time to teach literacy and numeracy to 100 Grade 1–4 learners after school. We know they have learnt a lot and even though some of the lessons have been challenging (Check out their previous Social Innovation Challenges!), we hope that their year at Sophakama will stand them in good stead for their individual journeys in the future.
Certainly we know that Sophakama and their learners are richer for having had the added teaching and development from these young people. We thank the Western Cape Premier’s Office for selecting Sophakama as one of its schools for the Year Beyond Programme.
We are sad to say goodbye to our first group of young volunteers. We wish them well!
